Edema. Video-lecture

Edema is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the tissues and cavities of the body. Most often observed in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, pleural and abdominal cavities. The edematous fluid contains water, sodium and potassium salts, some protein and leukocytes. The main factors leading to disruption of the local water balance, i.e. to edema, are an increase in hydrostatic pressure in the capillaries; decrease in oncotic pressure of blood plasma; increase in oncotic pressure of interstitial fluid; reduction of tissue mechanical pressure; increasing capillary permeability; violation of lymph outflow.
Edema cannot be an isolated syndrome; it is always a complication and, as a rule, accompanies severe diseases of the cardiovascular, endocrine, urinary and some other organs and systems.
